Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams is out with a “serious” knee injury, so it’s up to these three players to play it up on defense with Adams gone.

Pete Carroll’s expression when Denver Broncos kicker Brandon McManus missed his game-winning kick was iconic, but the thrilling 17-16 win did come at a significant cost.

After the game, Carroll divulged what was troubling safety Jamal Adams when he was sidelined with an injury in the second quarter. The Seahawks head coach described it as a “serious injury“, which the Seahawks believe damaged Adams’ quadriceps tendon. As of now, there is no timeline for Adams’ return to the field.

With Adams out for the foreseeable future, Seattle’s defense will have to continue playing it up the way they did when holding back the bucking Denver Broncos.

Here are three players who will need to close the gaps in Adams’ absence.

Josh Jones

Evidently, Josh Jones is the primary player who will have to play it up with Adams out, as Jones is the one who replaced Adams on the field following his injury.

Jones is on an incredible upswing, and Adams’ injury gives him an opportunity to make a case for increased snaps, even in Adams’ return. Drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 2017, Jones bounced around the league for several seasons until landing on Seattle’s practice squad last season. Jones started against the Cardinals and recorded 10 tackles and one pass defended.

Even before Adams was injured, Seahawks writer John Boyle predicted that Jones’ stellar play at camp would have him more involved than a typical safety in a secondary role:

"“And while the Seahawks have two Pro-Bowl safeties at the top of their depth chart in Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams, Jones has looked in training camp and the preseason like he is going to be more than just a backup this season. Throughout camp, Jones has found his way onto the field with the starting defense when the Seahawks deploy a three-safety look, and he has been one of the most obvious playmakers on defense over the past month.”"

Boyle’s profile on Jones offers a glimpse into the player Seahawks fans can expect on the field, and Jones’s performance foreshadows what he can bring to the team in Adams’ absence. On Monday night, Jones had seven total tackles on 80 percent of defensive snaps.
