This stat makes Mets being swept by Cubs look even worse
By Scott Rogust
If New York Mets fans felt bad about the team getting swept by the Chicago Cubs, they should feel worse after reading this statistic.
The New York Mets are set for a tough final stretch of the season, as they are looking to hold onto their NL East lead over the Atlanta Braves, the defending World Series champions. They had a chance to gain ground, as they took on the Chicago Cubs, who were well below .500.
Instead, the Cubs took the first two games of the three-game set. The Mets needed to pick up a win to avoid the sweep on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
New York lost 6-3 to Chicago. As if Mets fans were not feeling bad enough, this latest piece of information from Stats by STATS will not make them feel any better. The Cubs are now the first team in MLB history to have 30 fewer wins than their opponent entering a three-game road series, and sweep the series by winning every game by three or more runs.
Mets getting swept by Cubs is actually worse than you could have imagined
On Sept. 12, the Cubs won 5-2. On Sept. 13, Chicago won 4-1. Then on Wednesday, they won 6-3.
Speaking of the game on Sept. 14, the Cubs scored all six of their runs in the first inning. Mets starting pitcher David Peterson walked the first three batters of the game, then struck out Patrick Wisdom. Then Peterson surrendered back-to-back two-RBI doubles to Yan Gomes and P.J. Higgins.
Trevor Williams replaced Peterson, and immediately surrendered an RBI double by Michael Hermosillo and an RBI single Nelson Velazquez in his first two batters faced.
Luckily for New York, Atlanta also lost on Wednesday night, 4-1 to the San Francisco Giants.
It was a bad night for the Mets, as they now look to get back in the win column in their next four games against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Meanwhile, the Braves take on the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-game set.
