Mets 1B/OF Darin Ruf

Darin Ruf was one of the acquisitions that the Mets made at the trade deadline. They traded J.D. Davis, Thomas Szapucki, and two minors to the Giants for Ruf. It was a bad trade at the time that has been made even worse since.

With the Giants, he was hitting slightly below league average (97 OPS+). In 23 games with the Mets, Ruf is hitting .151/.190/.208 with an OPS+ of 14.

The aforementioned Starling Marte could return by October 1 and if he does, Ruf should be on his way out the door because he has, quite simply, been a complete liability. Even if Marte doesn’t return from the IL by October 1 (which seems increasingly likely), they should turn to somebody like Dom Smith, who is in Triple-A.

Getting rid of Ruf would be admitting that they made a mistake but better late than never.
