Watch: Ohio State legend Garrett Wilson score first career NFL touchdown in Ohio (Video)
Garrett Wilson made four catches for the Jets in his NFL debut, but he waited to return to the state of Ohio before securing his first touchdown grab.
Football fans in the state of Ohio are used to watching Garrett Wilson catch touchdown passes. Week 2 was different in the fact that the rookie wideout scored for someone other than the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Instead, Wilson scored these six points for the Jets. New York spent the No. 10 overall pick in last year’s draft on the talented wideout and should be pleased with his early season production. Scoring against the Browns on a nice route in the back of the end zone only serves to illustrate the comfort he has with the Jets’ offensive scheme.
Wilson does benefit as a rookie from the talent that accompanies him inside the Jets’ receiver room. Corey Davis arrived in the offseason as one of the offseason’s biggest free agency moves. Elijah Moore is also coming into his own as a second-year pro. That allows Wilson a lot of freedom to work in one-on-one matchups as he grows accustomed to life in the NFL.
Higher-ups in New York do expect Wilson to continue to make more and more plays as the season rolls along. He possesses an exceptional combination of size and speed that allows him to be productive on the outside and in the slot. That versatility makes it difficult for opposing defenses to field quality match-ups against Wilson on a regular basis.
In the end, Buckeyes fans may miss what Wilson gave them on Saturdays while Jets fans can get excited about what he will give them on upcoming Sundays. This touchdown should be the first of many for the former Ohio State standout.
