Herm Edwards fired: 5 replacements who can win at Arizona State
By John Buhler
The Arizona State Sun Devils will need to replace Herm Edwards as their head coach.
It is finally over, as the Arizona State Sun Devils did not play to win the games for Herm Edwards.
Edwards is out as the Sun Devils head coach after losing a clunker at home to Eastern Michigan. It was odd to hire him in the first place. The former New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs head coach was hired to bring a professional sense of development into The Valley. Not only did players not develop under him, but ASU faces sanctions for having on-campus visits at the peak of COVID…
Somebody has to take this job, right? Here are five candidates who would actually win in Tempe.
Herm Edwards fired: 5 replacements at head coach for Arizona State Sun Devils
If Hugh Freeze can win at Liberty, he can definitely win games at Arizona State
Eventually, somebody is going to take a chance on Liberty Flames head coach Hugh Freeze and make him a Power Five coach once again. While his time at Ole Miss ended in disgrace, people know about Liberty football because of the fine job Freeze has done in Lynchburg. Although he could definitely win at Arizona State, we have to wonder if his reputation will keep him away.
Lance Leipold is doing the lord’s work at Kansas, perhaps he is a fit in Tempe?
The returns are still early, but everybody is starting to pay attention to the amazing job Lance Leipold is doing at Kansas. Yes, the Kansas Jayhawks actually received votes in the latest AP Top 25 Poll. They are 3-0 and are trending towards making a bowl game. Leipold was a great coach at Buffalo previously. It remains to be seen if he will stay at Lawrence or take another job elsewhere.
Do you want to win or not? If you do, you may want to bring in … Urban Meyer
If you can stomach it, Urban Meyer has the potential to completely transform the Arizona State football program. Oh, he will quit on you within a decade and leave your program in utter disarray, but you will win, and you will win big! With USC and UCLA leaving the Pac-12 in 2024, Meyer could have these Sun Devils in the College Football Playoff by year two on the job if he is hired by them.
Coach Prime is going to get a Power Five job, but will he come to The Valley?
It was a great story, but it is over. Deion Sanders will be leading a Power Five team next season. He has done too well at Jackson State and there are too many interesting vacancies that are going to open up for him. Coach Prime will be a galvanizing presence wherever he goes. Whether that is Auburn, Georgia Tech, Nebraska or now Arizona State is totally up to him. He holds all of the cards.
Matt Rhule can handle any bad coaching situation in college, but not in the NFL
There is one man for the job, and we know who it is. It may not be working out for Matt Rhule in year three leading the Carolina Panthers, but what he did previously at Baylor and Temple will never be forgotten. He can turn around any downtrodden program. This is a man with a great deal of dignity and respect from his coaching peers. If he gets whacked in Charlotte, Rhule goes to ASU.
Ultimately, there are only two courses of action for Arizona State to make. They either hire a proven head coach with a troubled past and hope the shenanigans are behind him or they put their faith and trust into a man who is not afraid to get his hands dirty. There is too much talent in The Valley for Arizona State to be this anonymously bad. May Edwards’ successor be someone great.
Arizona State may not get its first choice, but getting way out ahead of this will serve the program.
