Russell Wilson took the Broncos for a ride.

It wasn’t pretty. The ESPN gamecast summary described the Broncos as “sloppy“, an apt word for the way they played on Sunday.

Still, Russell rode with them to the promised land of NFL wins, and that’s worth tipping our hats to.

Wilson completed less than half of his passes, but they were 14 passes that sailed 219 yards. Over half of those yards and passes went to Courtland Sutton, who landed seven passes for 122 yards.

That’s the headline for Denver in Week 2: the Sutton-Wilson connection is something to behold, and it will only get better in time.

Aside from the beauty on those connections, Wilson and the Broncos offense struggled to be on the same page. Those are normal growing pains for the quarterback of a new team, and not necessarily something to panic over so early in the season.

Wilson faced the worst possible situation in Week 1 as he went to Seattle to face his old Seahawks at Lumen Field… you know, one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL. And that stadium was chock full of hatred for the “Let’s Ride” version of Wilson.

In Denver, there was a sea of orange showing support for their new John Elway, their new Peyton Manning. We don’t yet know if Wilson will do what these two have done — bring a Super Bowl to Denver — but this is the only recipe that has worked for the past few decades. Build a solid team, inherit a Hall of Fame passer, and watch the magic happen.

The Broncos aren’t quite there yet, but Wilson has plenty of gas in the tank and several years linking him to the city. Week 2 saw him and this team come back and offer a glimmer of hope, and that’s more than Broncos fans have had since Manning hung up his cleats.
