After trading away Russell Wilson, the Seahawks have gone into the 2022 season with Geno Smith leading their offense. Yet they’re in a better position with him at the helm than the Steelers with Trubisky.

To be fair, getting Smith to Pittsburgh might have been a challenge since he has a comfort level with the Seahawks organization. Still, his performance in two games suggests he would have been worth the investment.

Smith has completed 81 percent of his passes while maintaining a passer rating of 99.1. That’s 23 points better than Trubisky’s.

Like the others, Smith isn’t a franchise quarterback but he can get the job done well enough. He definitely had what it takes in Seattle’s emotional victory over the Broncos in the season opener. Things were rougher against the 49ers in Week 2. However, he kept his composure despite facing a stout defense. That’s exactly the kind of presence Pittsburgh could have used this year.

This exercise goes to show that Pittsburgh’s options in free agency weren’t great this year. No one thinks Brissett, Mariota or Smith would lead the Steelers back to the promised land. Setting the stage for Pickett matters though and Pittsburgh could have done better.
