Do the Mets actually have a gripe with being hit by so many pitches?
By Scott Rogust
The New York Mets set the MLB record for being hit by the most pitches in a single season.
Earlier in the week, the New York Mets clinched their first postseason berth since 2016, after defeating the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. In that very game, Max Scherzer recorded his 200th career win. The history only continued when facing the Milwaukee Brewers this week.
During the team’s Sept. 21 game, Brewers pitcher Jake Cousins hit Mets infielder Luis Guillorme with a pitch that made contact with his left foot. With that, the Mets had their 106th player get hit by a pitch, which is now the most for any team in a single-season in the modern era.
Mets manager Buck Showalter did not look upset about it. In fact, he actually asked for the ball!

When meeting with the media, Showalter was asked what he was going to do with the record ball, and he joked that “it would be obscene to tell you what I’m going to do with it.” Showalter then said that he gave the ball to his hitting coaches.
You can listen to his comments in SNY’s tweet below:
The record was previously set by last year’s Cincinnati Reds, who were hit by pitches 105 times. That was the modern record, aka since 1900. The all-time record belongs to the 1889 Baltimore Orioles, who were hit by pitches 160 times.
New York was on pace to break the record since the start of the season. In their opening series against the Washington Nationals, they were hit by pitches five times in the four-game set, which did lead to the benches clearing in one game.
When it comes to who on the 2022 Mets was hit by pitches the most, it is outfielder Mark Canha with 24.
The Mets have broken a record. Now that that is out of the way, they look to win their first division title since 2015, as they look to pull away from the Atlanta Braves.
