College football rankings: Biggest losers from AP Top 25 Poll, Week 5
Oklahoma’s defense was exposed by Adrian Martinez
Brent Venables was supposed to whip Oklahoma’s defense into shape and it looked like he was succeeding on that front in the first three weeks of the season. Then they ran into Adrian Martinez and the Kansas State Wildcats.
The Sooners gave up five touchdowns, four of them rushing, to the opposing quarterback. They were chasing the Wildcats throughout as Martinez answered just about every score.
That’s why they had the biggest tumble in the polls this week, from No. 6 to No. 18.
Arkansas blew a lead to lose in the most painful way
Everything was going swimmingly for Arkansas in the first quarter against Texas A&M. They had a 14-0 lead and were well on their way to proving their legitimacy. Then everything went wrong. The Aggies scored the next 23 points, including an 82-yard fumble return touchdown in the second quarter.
The pollsters punished the Razorbacks accordingly, dropping them 10 spots to No. 20.
Kansas still gets no respect after beating Duke
Rank Kansas, you cowards!
The Jayhawks too down undefeated Duke in the “Why Won’t You Rank Us?” Bowl while quarterback Jalon Daniels launched his unlikely Heisman campaign with five touchdowns, four of them passing.
Sure, Kansas probably isn’t a Top 15 team with wins over Tennessee Tech, West Virginia, Houston and Duke but they are 4-0 with a bright quarterback at the helm. The disrespect is palpable.
