2) Giants free agent prediction: Evan Longoria will sign with the Rays

The Giants have a team option on Evan Longoria we should expect them to buy out. Longoria has not been very healthy since joining the Giants in 2018. He played fewer than 130 games in each season since with less than 100 in each of the last two years.

Add in a lack of production compared to his early days with the Tampa Bay Rays and it’s easy for the Giants to pay the $5 million instead of the $13 million salary to keep him. Where does he end up? A return home to the Rays would make some sense.

The Rays are careful spenders and the familiarity between the two sides could make for a nice one-year deal at a rather low cost. Longoria could be a corner field/DH option for the Rays in 2023 as they look to compete once again.

Because Longoria does turn 37 this October, it’s going to be tough for him to find too many jobs. A very affordable one-year deal with the first team he ever knew could be beneficial for both sides. As downtrodden as he is as this stage of his career, Longoria can remain a part-timer. He’d also have a chance to add a World Series ring. It’s one object missing from his resume.
