2. Phantom holding on Minnesota’s last gasp return

In Week 4, the Minnesota Golden Gophers earned a 34-7 win over the Michigan State Spartans. All they had to do to continue their undefeated season was to beat the Purdue Boilermakers.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Golden Gophers trailed the Boilermakers 20-10 and had a serious shot to make a comeback. As Purdue kicked off the football, Quentin Redding returned it for a huge 64-yard gain in what would have set them up for a field goal, at minimum.

Instead, the referees declared that there was a holding penalty, and the return was negated. Even the broadcast was confused as to where the holding was.

Five plays later, Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan threw a game-sealing interception to give Purdue the 20-10 victory.
