Watch Sir Elton John suplex on those helpless New York Mets, as his beloved Atlanta Braves completed a massive series sweep over their hated division rival this past weekend.

While many people in Nashville were excited about seeing Sir Elton John rock out one last time at Nissan Stadium, who saw him absolutely obliterate the New York Mets on-stage in between songs?

John may hail from across the pond, but he has had an apartment in Atlanta since the 1990s. The rock and roll icon naturally became a staunch support of the Atlanta Braves during their Team of the ’90s run. Although he is in his 70s and is saying goodbye to his fans on his farewell tour, him keeping the Nashvillian legion of Braves Country up to date was purely and undeniably priceless.

“Something that makes me very happy tonight, the Braves swept the Mets,” said John in Nashville.

For those not keeping tabs at home, what the Braves did over the weekend was nothing short of remarkable. After proclaiming “The NL East is over!”, SNY’s Sal Licata prematurely vomited into a microphone after Memorial Day Weekend. Over the last four months, the Braves overcame a double-digit game deficit to now be up two on the Mets in the NL East with only three games left.

By completing the home sweep of the Mets, Atlanta saw its magic number drop from four to one. The Braves have the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mets and up two games in the standings with three left to be played. In short, the Braves need to either win one more game over the Miami Marlins or the Mets have to lose one more game to the Washington Nationals to win the NL East.

While it is still possible for the Mets to win the division, it would take nothing short of a 28-3 Atlanta Falcons collapse in the Super Bowl for that to happen. Miami is not the least bit good, as skipper Don Mattingly is stepping down later this week. Plus, NL Cy Young favorite Sandy Alcantara has been prematurely shut down for the season. Atlanta controls now its own destiny.

Most importantly for the reigning World Series champions, one more win or a Mets loss gives the Braves the No. 2 seed in the National League. That means they will get a first-round bye into the NLDS, where they would face the winner of the No. 3 vs. No. 6 NL Wild Card Series. Atlanta probably draws either the St. Louis Cardinals, the Philadelphia Phillies or the Milwaukee Brewers.

As for the Mets, they would be the No. 4 seed in the Senior Circuit, where they would host presumably the San Diego Padres in the No. 4 vs. No. 5 NLWCS beginning on Friday. While the Mets should be able to get past San Diego at home, their big issues happen when they advance. They would have to face the top-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers in their NLDS as the obvious dog.

Ultimately, I think it’s gonna be a long, long time before we see anybody associated with the Mets proclaim season victory on the last day of May. The shame in it all is this is the best Mets season in years and buffoons like Licata played a part in ruining it for them. New York can still win the World Series, but the Mets now have the hardest path. San Diego, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston…

It seems to me the New York Mets lived their life like a candle in the wind, if we’re being honest…
