College football 2022 Week 6 upset pick, lock, bad bet, and strangest thing

Week 5 of the 2022 college football season saw two more coaches dismissed, and some struggle wins for ranked teams. Week 6, you’re on deck. 

Through five weeks of the 2022 college football season, we’ve already seen five head coaches lose their jobs (six, if you count Twitter firing Bryan Harsin at Auburn) and it seems there will be more to come.

Beyond more coaches getting fired last week — Karl Dorrell from Colorado, and Paul Chryst from Wisconsin — there were also some unexpected turns happening in games that involved ranked teams.

The former No. 1 team in the nation (now No. 2 behind Alabama), Georgia, struggled mightily to notch victory number five on the season, slogging it out with the Missouri Tigers on the road. The heavily-favored Dawgs didn’t take the lead in that game until there were four minutes left in the 4th quarter.

Other Top 25 teams who were bitten by the upset bug included Kentucky, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Pittsburgh.

Week 6 has some particularly interesting matchups that could prove to mean more movement in the AP Top 25 this week, and will hopefully lead to a rebound in my picks.

Upset: Hats off to Boise State. With all the internal turmoil, they looked to be easy pickings for a San Diego State team who had the ability to score in bunches. Didn’t happen, and the Broncos rolled to a big win.

Lock: Like a lot of people, the Washington Huskies made a believer out of me. Unfortunately, UCLA was not among those people and wiped the floor with the 3-point favorite Huskies. At least I picked the over correctly.

Another 1-2 week, bringing me to 7-6 on the season for my picks. I’m seeing a comeback week in my future.

College Football Week 6 Upset Pick: TCU Horned Frogs vs Kansas Jayhawks

When the season began, there were eight Power-5 schools that ESPN College GameDay had never visited. One of those will be crossed off the list this week when the traveling pregame show hits Lawrence, Kansas, and the undefeated (yes…undefeated) Jayhawks.

Memorial Stadium is sold out. Kansas fans are at a fever pitch over their football team for the first time since the early 2000s, and with good reason. This Kansas team is not a fluke, nor is quarterback Jalon Daniels. This is a very, very good football team.

That said, so is TCU, and defensively the Horned Frogs might have an edge. But you add College GameDay to the mix and what may be the first “hostile environment” at Memorial Stadium in two decades, and it all spells upset.

The Jayhawks are a perfect 5-0 ATS this season, and they should certainly beat at a 7-point margin, if not outright win the game. Over/Under for this one is 68.5, and I’d take the over on anything up to 70.

Pick: In a shootout, the Jayhawks improve to 6-0, and head coach Lance Leipold suddenly moves to the front of the list for every current head coach vacancy. 

Heading down south for a matchup in the SEC, the reeling Razorbacks travel to Starkvegas.

College Football Week 6 Lock: Arkansas Razorbacks vs Mississippi State Bulldogs

As much as I hate to say Sam Pittman’s Hawgs are going to lose three straight games, I have to face the fact that Arkansas’ pass defense is horrible, and Bulldogs quarterback Will Rogers is probably licking his chops watching game film.

The Mississippi State offense is really beginning to hum, and it could be a long afternoon for the Razorbacks.

Mike Leach’s Bulldogs are 3-1-1 ATS so far this season, including 2-0-1 playing at home as favorites. 8.5 points almost seems a little too steep, but chances are the Arkansas pass defense isn’t going to make a miraculous turnaround.

Pick: Bulldogs by 10, but Sam Pittman stays off the hot seat for now

So what’s the game to stay away from this week? Let’s continue the western trend.

College Football Week 6 Bad Bet: Auburn Tigers vs Georgia Bulldogs

Never, ever get cocky handicapping the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, especially this season.

The Bulldogs have failed to cover as massive favorites in the last two weeks, and giving them nearly 30 points in a big rivalry game may be pushing things a bit, even for a team as good as Georgia.

Very little chance the Tigers pull an upset here but based on what Missouri was able to do against the Dawgs, there’s a better-than-average chance Auburn can keep this one close for a few quarters.

Save your money when it comes to betting on Georgia right now until they have righted the ship a bit.

Pick: Georgia wins by two scores and a safety. 

The Strangest Thing We Saw in College Football Week 5

Probably the biggest oddity out of Week 5 didn’t even happen on the gridiron…it was on the baseball diamond.

Throughout the weekend, ESPN continually broke into its college football coverage to allow viewers to watch Yankees slugger Aaron Judge try to break the American League all-time single-season home run record.

College football fans were not amused.

PS: Aaron Judge hit zero homers when interrupting college football games. Take note, Yankees.
