5 biggest mistakes that doomed the White Sox in 2022 and why
2. Thinking that the AL Central would be a cakewalk again
The White Sox won the AL Central by 13 games last year and everyone thought it would be a cakewalk for them again this year. The problem was that the White Sox thought this too.
They have shown at various times throughout the season to be very lackadaisical. This has shown in baserunning (not being aggressive in trying to take an extra base, stealing bases, going first to third on a single to right field, etc.) and defense (not diving for catchable balls, poor reads, etc.) the most but it has also shown at the plate. They have the second-worst chase rate in the sport (32.6 percent).
By swinging at non-competitive pitches so often, they are just giving more momentum to opposing pitchers for having a quick inning. Of the top 12 teams in total pitches seen, eight of them are in the playoffs and another one (the Brewers) will end up two games out of a playoff spot.
