Joey Gallo’s dreadful season capped off with this embarrassing stat

Joey Gallo’s dreadful 2022 performance capped off with new embarrassing stat.
Perhaps no player in the major leagues was thrown into the spotlight in a negative way more than Joey Gallo was during the 2022 regular season.
Gallo, 28, is known for possessing arguably the most powerful bat in the league when he makes contact. Unfortunately for him, that seems to be the issue. Gallo has long struggled with strikeouts and the inability to hit anything other than home runs.
The opposite is true for New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge. Judge, 30, finished the year with one of the best stat lines the game has seen in recent memory; leading the AL in home runs (62) and RBI (131) and falling just short of the batting title which would’ve landed him the second AL Triple Crown since the 60’s.
Thanks to this painful stat from Twitter user @gifs_baseball, Gallo’s struggles are shown in a whole new light.
Yes, you read that right. Aaron Judge hit more home runs than Gallo registered base hits.
Dodgers: Joey Gallo’s painful season capped off with even more painful stat
The 2022 campaign began with Gallo being a teammate of Judge’s on the Yankees. Entering his second season in the Bronx, the expectations were that he would be able to improve on his weak performance in the previous season after coming over from the Rangers via trade.
Through 82 games as a New York Yankee, Gallo hit 12 home runs in 270+ plate appearances and managed just a .159 batting average with an OPS of 77. This poor performance did not go over well with Yankee fans and he began to struggle off the field as well, at one point mentioning he was afraid to leave his home during the season in fear of running into angry fans on the streets.
At the deadline, Gallo was flipped to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a minor league pitcher and while he performed slightly better on the West Coast, he still hit just .162 and posted an OPS+ of 83.
All told, Gallo struck out in 40% of his plate appearances this year, a new career high (or low, really) for him. He ended his season with a total of 56 base hits alongside the 62 home runs hit by Judge.
The more you think about this crazy stat, the more painful it becomes. There’s a chance that something like this may never happen again. Then again, as long as both players remain active and remain their current selves on the field, we could see a repeat as soon as next season.
