3) Jose Abreu rumors: San Diego Padres need the run production

The San Diego Padres have tried a lot of things at first base. They were able to finally trade Eric Hosmer this year. They also dealt Luke Voit away when it was obvious that wouldn’t work. Because Josh Bell struggled so mightily after they acquired him at the trade deadline, it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that he won’t be back either.

The Padres are baseball’s most aggressive team when they choose to buy. With Juan Soto definitely on the roster for at least next season, they need to pull out all of the stops. They’ve locked up several players to long-term contracts already. Abreu, whether he’s a one year mercenary or more, could help fix one of their bigger needs.

Believe it or not, the Padres were an average-at-best offense in 2022. They had the 16th best average, scored the 13th most runs, and were 21st in home runs. Whatever version of Abreu they get, they will benefit.

Jose Abreu rumors could definitely lead him to San Diego. He actually seems to fit in well with the young talent of Juan Soto and the more veteran status of Manny Machado. Whether he’s their starting first baseman or a DH, there’s a place for Abreu on the Padres roster.
