2. Jacob deGrom will continue to struggle for the New York Mets

When the calendar turned to September, the problems began for Jacob deGrom.

After being activated from the 60-day injured list and making his season debut on August 2, deGrom looked like an ace in his six August starts, with opponents hitting just .136 against him as he posted a 1.98 ERA and 0.551 WHIP in 36.1 innings of work.

September, however, was a different story. After surrendering just three home runs in all of August, deGrom gave up that many in just one pivotal outing on September 30 in Atlanta. In all, deGrom surrendered six home runs in September on his way to a 4.50 ERA and 1.000 WHIP in five starts covering 28.0 innings.

deGrom has certainly not looked like himself at a time when the Mets have needed him the most, and that stretch will continue in the postseason. At the time of this writing, Buck Showalter had inserted Max Scherzer as his Game 1 starter against the Padres and was reportedly leaning away from deGrom for Game 2, with Chris Bassitt getting the call in Game 2 if the Mets win the first game against San Diego. If the Padres take a 1-0 lead, deGrom would be on the mound for an elimination game (Game 2), and would also get the call if the series goes to three games.

The Mets have to rely on deGrom in the postseason and hope that he can shake off his September struggles. Our bold prediction is that deGrom will dash New York’s hopes of a bounce back performance.
