Yordan Alvarez’s family was overcome with joy after he hit a game-winning, walk-off home run for the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Seattle Mariners.

The Houston Astros looked to be on the verge to an ALDS Game 1 loss to their rivals, the Seattle Mariners. That all changed, as they overcame a 7-3 deficit to set up a game-winning situation in the ninth inning. Down 7-5 with two runners on, slugger Yordan Alvarez hit a massive home run off Robbie Ray to give the Astros the 8-7 win and 1-0 series lead.

Those in attendance at Minute Maid Park were ecstatic after seeing Alvarez’s home run. In the crowd was Alvarez’s family to see him play in a postseason game for the first time.

What a moment.

The Astros showed that they are a dangerous team this postseason. They had a suboptimal start from AL Cy Young frontrunner Justin Verlander, who allowed six earned runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. But, the team bounced back to win in dramatic fashion.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Astros had cut the deficit to 7-5 on a two-run home run by Alex Bregman. Then, in the ninth, the aforementioned two runners on base situation happened. With Alvarez due up, Mariners manager Scott Servais decided to pull Paul Sewald in favor Ray, a starter. That move backfired in spectacular fashion, as the Mariners left with a 8-7 loss instead of a 7-5 win.

This was the second walk-off home run in postseason history to be recorded by a team down to their final out. The other home run was Kirk Gibson’s homer in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, per ESPN Stats and Info.

The Astros and Mariners play in Game 2 on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 3:37 p.m. ET.
