Stop comparing Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes to each other
The comparisons between Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes need to stop until further notice.
Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes are both great and are likely going to combine for a fistful of Super Bowl rings when their respective careers are over.
There. In 27 words, we’ve wrapped the argument that has been raging all week among NFL fans.
It’s not as ultra-compelling as the discourse suggests, but it’s the truth. Sometimes, the unentertaining is the accurate assessment. Whether you’re a Bills fan, a Chiefs supporter, or just an NFL casual, it’s not hard to see both are great and should be appreciated as such in their own time.
Of course, again, that’s not entertaining, We live for comparisons.
In this specific instance, it’s usually performative nonsense about how Allen has eclipsed Mahomes, despite no actual evidence to that point.
So, let’s stick to facts. Through their careers, Mahomes has started 68 regular-season games while Allen has clocked in for 65. Here’s a current summary of where they stand in a head-to-head statistical comparison:
In short, over the totality of their career, there is no comparison.
Additionally, Mahomes has thrown for more yards, more touchdowns, and fewer interceptions every year when compared to Allen. He’s also won three of their four matchups, including each of the past two postseasons. This Sunday, we get Round 5 at Arrowhead Stadium.
Stop comparing Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen to each other
Yet this comes off like snubbing Allen, and that shouldn’t happen. Allen is a Hall-of-Fame level talent with incredible upside. He’s only 26 years old with a cannon for a right arm and the running style of Earl Campbell. He’s incredible.
And, if someone wants to make the case for Allen being on the same level as Mahomes, it goes something like this: Since Allen’s meteoric rise in 2020, he’s accounted for 12,011 offensive yards and 103 touchdowns, while Mahomes has 11,758 total yards and 94 scores. Unquestionably, Allen is the better dual-threat, able to use his legs and 6-foot-5, 237-pound frame to run over defenders in a way Mahomes couldn’t.
Ultimately, the discourse on sports is largely broken. In this case, Mahomes has the clear upper hand from a career and accolades standpoint. Allen has had a strong case for the past two years, albeit hurt by the way those seasons have ended.
Regardless, comparing the two stars — and friends — is to miss the larger point.
We’re getting to witness two of the most talented quarterbacks to ever grace a football field, battling it out for what should be the next decade.
And to that end, there is no argument about which quarterback rivalry is best.
Allen vs. Mahomes stands alone.
