Yankees vs Guardians: NYY has opportunity to put nail in the coffin after game moved
By Josh Wilson
Due to weather, the ALDS Game 2 between the Yankees game against the Guardians has been rescheduled.
It’s raining in New York City. That means Game 2 of the ALDS between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians will be played on Friday afternoon instead of Thursday night.
The decision was announced on Thursday afternoon with no let-up in the forecast. It comes a day after Game 2 of Phillies/Braves was postponed for several hours.
Now that the game has been moved, it sets the Yankees up with a perfect opportunity to put the nail in the coffin for the Guardians. New York looked every bit as dominant against Cleveland in Game 1 as they did in their regular season matchups, and a Game 2 win for New York would make it extremely difficult for Cleveland.
Guardians @ Yankees Game 2 of ALDS moved due to weather
Firstly, keep in mind it’s a best-of-five, and so the Guardians would need to win three straight in order to overcome a two-game deficit. Had they gone down 0-2 with the original schedule, they would have had a day to recuperate and reset from travel on Friday. Now? They get to go back home, sure, but it’s going to be on a very short schedule.
Game 3 is on Saturday night, Game 4 (if needed) on Sunday night, and Game 5 on Monday night back in the Bronx, if necessary.
Obviously, a NYC-to-Cleveland flight isn’t that far. Estimating conservatively, it would be a three-hour flight. But that lack of an opportunity to rest the body and mind when your back is against the wall can’t be overlooked.
At this time, other games in the series have not been moved. That’s four games in a row. The advantage in that case always goes to the team with a game advantage.
Baseball schedules are nonstop during the season, sometimes going 15-20 days without a break, so this isn’t unheard of, but the postseason does call for a superior level of play.
We’ll see how this goes down.
