It looks like Jose Abreu could move to the opposite side of the city and join the Cubs, which would be horrible for the White Sox.
It looks like Jose Abreu and the Chicago White Sox could be splitting up.
Abreu’s contract is closing out, and despite how good he was this year — fourth in hits in the MLB — there haven’t been any discussions of an extension.
José Abreu on whether he wants to play next year:

“Of course, I love baseball!”
Staying with the White Sox is less certain. He says there haven’t been talks with the front office and that he will take time this offseason to rest and think about what comes next.
Of course, that doesn’t mean there won’t be discussions, but considering the White Sox can get out in front of other teams to talk about a contract, you’d think they would take advantage if they really wanted him to stay.
Sometimes, even if both sides like each other, it’s just not the right timing, and that’s sort of what it feels like here. If things don’t work out between the two sides, where would Abreu — who has never played for anyone other than the White Sox — move to? Fans would hope for anyone but their division rivals and cross-town rival Chicago Cubs.
Welp. Looks like that might be where he ends up.
Cubs are a possible Jose Abreu destination, which White Sox fans will hate
Bruce Levine of 670 The Score has reported the Cubs have interest in the first baseman (H/T MLB Trade Rumors).
The MLB Trade Rumors article goes on to break down the reasoning. Abreu, though he’d probably prefer more of a clear-cut contender, could keep his roots in Chicago if things don’t work with the Sox.
Abreu, a three-time All-Star and former MVP, will certainly have suitors outside of Chicago as well, should he want to pursue them.
He’s been Mr. White Sox for all these years, so it would certainly hurt for Southside fans to see him suiting up in the Friendly Confines as a Cub.
It’ll be an interesting next deal since you’re paying more for the veteran presence on the backend of the contract than you are his skills, depending on the length of the contract, of course.
