With the New York Yankees on the brink of elimination, outfielder Harrison Bader came up huge. Bader hit a two-run homer to give the Yanks a 3-0 lead.

New York acquired Harrison Bader at the trade deadline in a surprising move which sent Jordan Montgomery to the St. Louis Cardinals. For quite some time, Montgomery and the Cards were viewed as the winners of that trade, if only because Bader was injured.

Montgomery, meanwhile, got off to an impressive start with St. Louis before fading down the stretch. The 29-year-old pitcher was a Yankees clubhouse favorite — so much so that his now-former teammates openly rooted for him in the locker room shortly after the deal.

Cashman didn’t take clubhouse culture into account when he dealt for Bader, and initially, it backfired. But Bader has fit in quite well this postseason, and hit his third home run on Sunday night in Game 4.

Yankees fans think they won Harrison Bader-Jordan Montgomery trade

After all three Bader home runs this postseason, Montgomery’s name has been brought to the forefront by fans — perhaps a little prematurely — looking back on the deal made by Cashman.

Who really won said trade? Both teams benefitted, as the Cardinals needed pitching, and New York wanted outfield depth. Bader is a tremendous talent, especially defensively, when healthy. And he grew up in Bronxville, NY.

All of a sudden, Cashman looks much better for his vision, which included Bader playing centerfield in New York for years to come.

By no means should fans slight Montgomery, however, given he also played a vital role for an eventual postseason team. The Cardinals faults are now his to bare alone. I officially declare this trade a tie.
