Yu Darvish one-ups Curt Schilling with bloody pant game

Padres pitcher Yu Darvish let it rip in Game 1 of the NLCS against the Phillies with a bloody patch on his knee reminiscent of Curt Shilling’s bloody sock.

Remember the bloody sock? MLB sports lore may have to add the bloody pants to the picture after Tuesday’s NLCS Game 1.

Yu Darvish took the mound against the Phillies and it wasn’t long before the cameras noticed a bloody spot on the Padres ace’s right knee.

The broadcast speculated the blood could have been produced by Darvish’s cleat catching his knee during his pitching motion. Whatever it was, it couldn’t have been comfortable.

Darvish didn’t act as though it bothered him in the slightest. He allowed just one hit in his first three innings with five strikeouts. He was in control and absolutely dealing, especially in the third when he struck out looking all three batters he faced.

Naturally, comparisons were made between Darvish and Curt Schilling, who famously pitched Game 6 of the ALCS with visible blood on his sock.

Schilling was dealing with an ankle injury, which required sutures before the game. The blood was from those sutures, though that wasn’t immediately clear during the game.

His Game 6 bloody sock was sold at auction in 2013 for almost $100,000. A second blood sock from Game 2 of the World Series is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. We’ll have to see what becomes of Darvish’s bloody pants when Game 1 is finished.

The Padres didn’t exactly expect to have Darvish pitching in the NLCS, bloody pants or not. They scrapped their way into the playoffs despite early struggles and Fernando Tatis Jr.’s suspension. They took down the Mets in the NL Wild Card and then stunned the Dodgers in the NLDS to take one step closer to the World Series.
