1. Monster Cardinals free agent target: J.D. Martinez
J.D. Martinez could end up as one of the more overlooked free agents this offseason. Some injuries hurt him as a member of the 2022 Boston Red Sox. His power numbers were down yet he still hit for average and could make a team very happy at the DH spot.
Albert Pujols retiring gives the Cardinals an opening to sign someone like Martinez to even a one-year contract with a high salary. Martinez does have something to prove. After all, his back issues may have been one of the reasons why the Red Sox were unable to trade him at the deadline.
On the list of monster free agents, Martinez falls well behind Contreras, Judge, and Verlander. Those three are going to grab headlines away from other cities. Let’s not negate how well Martinez can play in the right environment. In the Cardinals lineup, with plenty of support, we could get a little bit of a resurgence.
Martinez will have a variety of suitors this offseason. From teams hoping to take a step forward like the Arizona Diamondbacks to one already in competition for a title like the Cardinals, it shouldn’t cost all that much. He’d be a buy-low candidate that could easily turn into a monster addition the fans are thanking the front office for signing.
