The Houston Astros may very well be the best team remaining in the MLB Postseason, but one of their best players in Jose Altuve can’t buy a hit right now.

Jose Altuve’s struggles make the Astros accomplishments all the more impressive this postseason. Altuve has routinely come up in big games for this Houston team, specifically in its AL Pennant runs in 2017 and 2019. Who could forget his walk-off blast to defeat the Yankees in 2019 off Aroldis Chapman?

Yet, in 2022, Altuve can’t buy a hit. Through 4.5 playoff games, Altuve is 0-for-21 from the plate.

Houston Astros star Jose Altuve’s struggles continue

Manager Dusty Baker remains convinced that Altuve will eventually break through his slump, but Houston can’t afford a gaping hole near the top of its lineup for long.

“The mentally strong have a way of dealing with the down times,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said before the start of the ALCS. “We just have to increase concentration and focus. And when you’re in a downward spiral, man, sometimes it’s hard to get out. I don’t care who you are. But I’m expecting big things out of Altuve — because he expects big things out of himself.”

Given Altuve’s status as one of the only remaining players from Houston’s 2017 World Series team — aka the sign-stealing squad — he receives plenty of flack on social media.

Of course, Altuve’s strikeout didn’t matter in the long run. As they have all postseason, Houston rallied around its fallen star. Alex Bregman hit a three-run homer to give the Astros an early lead, and knock Yankees starter Luis Severino out of the game.

If Altuve ever does get going, the Yankees and rest of baseball should officially be put on notice.
