4. Monster SF Giants free agent target: Jose Abreu

Admittedly, signing Jose Abreu isn’t quite as fantastic as a deal with Judge. Who would ever argue that? However, if it’s quantity the Giants are after, Abreu as the new DH or first baseman would offer them some offensive improvements while also allowing wiggle room to spend in other areas of need, too.

Let’s say the Giants sign Judge. Can we really expect them to improve other areas? It’s far less likely. A three-year contract with Abreu—even with decreasing power but a high batting average—would open up the possibility of adding more around him.

Abreu has been one of baseball’s most underrated performers since he joined the league. The 2020 American League MVP has guaranteed the Chicago White Sox 100 RBI in nearly every season of his career. He has done it with power, too, until this most recent season.

In their mission to become a better ball club, the Giants do need to be cautious about signing older players. Abreu hasn’t slowed down yet. The availability of the DH in the National League can extend his career. Somewhat quietly, he’s one of the better free agent targets for a team like the Giants to go out and add along with another bat or even an arm.
