Christian McCaffrey is pushing 49ers to let him play on Sunday
By Josh Wilson
Christian McCaffrey desperately wants to play his first game with the 49ers on Sunday.
Christian McCaffrey was traded from the Carolina Panthers to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday Night.
The turnaround for such a trade is really tight. He didn’t get to California until Friday morning, and he was launched right into observing practice after getting equipped with his locker and gear, according to Nick Wagoner. He only has Friday and Saturday to get to know the playbook, as well as his teammates, before Sunday’s game.
It doesn’t sound like a turnaround he can make, but he’s going to do his best to push the team to let him play.
Niners GM John Lynch told Wagoner that McCaffrey wants to play:
"“It’s not yet clear whether McCaffrey will play Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, but he’s already lobbying to be active, according to Lynch. McCaffrey said the decision will be up to the team on whether he plays, with Shanahan adding that McCaffrey’s status has more to do with whether he can quickly learn enough of the playbook to contribute and nothing to do with how he’s feeling physically.”"
Christian McCaffrey still has a shot at playing on Sunday
Against the odds, McCaffrey is pushing to play on Sunday. And if he can soak up enough of the playbook today, he just might be able to convince the team to let him go at it.
The Week 7 matchup for San Fran is at home against the Chiefs. Kansas City is obviously a daunting opponent, so having as much talent on the field as possible is obviously the goal. But you want that talent to be privy to the playbook so they can execute the strategy.
KC also has a pretty staunch run defense, and so having CMC in there to counter that could get the Niners closer to a win.
Since he’s so close to playing Week 7, we can assume that if he’s not ready to go this week, he’ll debut next week for the Niners in Los Angeles against the Rams. That’s an important game with how close the standings are in the NFC West. As of Saturday, every team in the division has three wins.
