Who should Chicago Cubs fans root for in the World Series and why?

As a fan of Major League Baseball, one obviously wants their home team to win the World Series every year. That’s the goal, right?

For Chicago Cubs fans, this was not a realistic goal entering the 2022 campaign, just one year after the club underwent a massive fire sale that saw Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and more leave the team via trade.

While the club performed slightly better than expected, finishing the year 74-88 in third place in the NL Central, there was never much of a real chance at overtaking either the Cardinals or Brewers in the standings.

Fast forward to the 2022 World Series and you have a matchup between the National League’s Philadelphia Phillies and the American League’s Houston Astros.

Who should Cubs fans be rooting for in the World Series?

The easy answer here is: the Philadelphia Phillies.

Why? Because Cubs fans are ultra loyal to players who are both currently on the team and players who used to be on the team.

Enter the two favorite members of the Phillies, outfielder Kyle Schwarber and relief pitcher David Robertson (all due respect to Astros catcher Martin Maldonado, whose four game Cubs tenure in 2019 will live on forever).

Schwarber is undoubtedly the more loved character between the two of them, for good reason at that. “Schwarbs” is just wrapping up his second season as a member of the Phillies and boy was it a good one.

In 155 games as the Phillies everyday left fielder, Schwarber hit 46 home runs (a career high) and drove in 94 runs, also a career high.

His strikeouts are still a major issue but he took his offensive game to another level this year which has to make Cubs fans happy as he will forever hold a special place in their hearts after his six-year tenure in Chicago to start his career.

The same could be said for the 37-year-old Robertson, who should be a very familiar face to all Cubs fans, seeing as how he was on their home team’s roster for the first half of the 2022 campaign.

After a dominant 36-game run with the Cubbies, Robertson was flipped to Philadelphia at the trade deadline for minor league pitcher Ben Brown, where he continued to thrive and capped off his best season since 2017 on a World Series caliber club.

The presence of Schwarber and Robertson should make picking a team in the World Series an easy call for Cubs fans, as both players had successful runs in Chicago and it has to be nice to see them succeeding regardless of where they’re playing.
