Winners: Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings pulled off the most shocking trade of NFL trade deadline day. Sitting at 6-1 on the year under first-year head coach Kevin O’Connell and first-year general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, they were in a position to make a big move to help improve their odds of making it to Super Bowl 57 out of the NFC.

Minnesota was in need of a tight end, as Irv Smith Jr. is sidelined for 8-10 weeks due to a high-ankle sprain. So, they decided to call the rival Detroit Lions, and managed to secure tight end T.J. Hockenson!

The Vikings brought in Hockenson, a 2023 fourth-round pick, and a 2024 conditional fourth-round draft pick in exchange for a 2023 second-round draft pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick.

With this move, the Vikings provided quarterback Kirk Cousins with another weapon in the passing attack. Hockenson is under contract until the end of the 2023 season. This is a huge win for the winners in the Vikings.

Losers: Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers desperately need to fix their passing offense. The team moved on from wide receiver Davante Adams, trading him to the Las Vegas Raiders. Not only that, but they let Marquez Valdes-Scantling walk to the Kansas City Chiefs on a multi-year contract. They decided to fill the holes by signing Sammy Watkins in free agency, and draft Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure.

Green Bay’s wide receiver corps has not performed well through the first eight games of the season. They have dealt with injuries, drops, and inconsistency. This was the time for the Packers to make a move for a wide receiver.

From those of you who have followed the Packers over the years, it should not come as a shock that they didn’t make a move to bring Rodgers another pass-catcher. The Packers failed to make a single move at the trade deadline. To make matters worse, they watched as the rival Chicago Bears acquire wide receiver Chase Claypool from the Pittsburgh Steelers, despite making the same offer.

Much like the Buccaneers, the Packers will be hoping that sticking with the team as is will work out.
