Everything Phillies fans yelled at Astros players in Game 3 and why
By Scott Rogust
Here is everything that Philadelphia Phillies fans yelled at Houston Astros players in Game 3 of the World Series.
The Philadelphia Phillies faithful who got to attended Game 3 of the World Series had the time of their lives on Tuesday night. Not only was it their first World series game at Citizens Bank Park in over a decade, but they got to watch the Phillies essentially hold batting practice, taking a 7-0 lead over the Houston Astros.
Ever since the sign-stealing scandal, Astros players faced the wrath of opposing fanbases when they play on the road. Sure enough that was the case when they entered the ballpark in Philadelphia to take a 2-1 World Series lead over the Phillies.
So what exactly did the Phillies faithful chant at the Astros players?
Everything Phillies fans chanted at Astros players
Well, the main chant throughout the night “cheaters,” specifically towards second baseman Jose Altuve, third baseman Alex Bregman, and first baseman Yuli Gurriel. Those three players were part of the 2017 World Series-winning team that electronically and illegally stole signs throughout that season and postseason. As for the other players, they just got booed.
Phillies fans did direct their attention towards Astros catcher Martin Maldonado, chanting “check his bat.”
Of course, this is in reference to the bat Maldonado received from former Los Angeles Angeles teammate Albert Pujols ahead of Game 1, which he used in that contest. As it turns out, the bat was considered illegal by MLB and banned in 2010. The bat did not carry a competitive advantage. Rather, it was banned due to a safety reason, specifically that the bat carries a risk of splintering into multiple pieces, an MLB official told Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Pujols was allowed to use that bat, as it was grandfathered in for anyone who played prior to the 2010 season. Maldonado went back to using his old baseball bat for Game 2.
Philadelphia got the 7-0 win and took a 2-1 series lead over Houston.
