Heisman Trophy Power Rankings: Drake Maye, Blake Corum close gap on Stroud, Hooker
By Scott Rogust
Drake Maye and Blake Corum are gaining ground on C.J. Stroud and Hendon Hooker in the Heisman race after Week 11.
Last week was probably the most chaotic weekend of college football we have seen in quite some time. Three of the Top 10 ranked teams in the nation all lost their respective games, after all. That also affected the Heisman Trophy Power Rankings, due in part to some less-than-impressive performances by Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker.
Week 11 was, well, more normal as compared to Week 10. The favorites for the Heisman did have some better games this weekend, but there were some contenders who made some big jumps up the rankings or are closing on Stroud and Hooker.
Here are the latest Heisman Trophy Power Rankings after Week 11.
Heisman Trophy Power Rankings, Week 11
Last week, Jayden Daniels helped the LSU Tigers upset the Alabama Crimson Tide with a 32-31 overtime victory. That pushed Alabama out of College Football Playoff contention, and LSU into SEC Championship Game contention. In Week 11, the Tigers needed to defeat the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Crimson Tide to beat the Ole Miss Rebels to clinch the SEC West.
LSU was able to get the win over Arkansas, but by the narrow margin of 13-10. The Tigers ran the football a total of 51 times while throwing the ball just 15 times.
On his 15 pass attempts, Daniels completed just eight of them for 86 yards, while throwing one interception. He also ran the football 19 times but picked up just 10 yards.
It was quite the drop-off for Daniels, hence him moving down two spots on the power rankings. But, LSU did clinch the SEC West after Alabama beat Ole Miss 30-24.
One of the top quarterbacks in the nation has been Michael Penix Jr. the left-hander for the Washington Huskies. Entering Week 11, Penix had recorded the second-most passing yards of any quarterback in the nation. He didn’t get much love on the Heisman rankings, due in part to the team having two losses. But that changed after the team’s win over the No. 6 Oregon Ducks.
Penix threw a brutal red zone interception in the second half, but he managed to bounce back from that play by throwing a 62-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Taj Davis to tie the game at 34 points apiece with a little over three minutes remaining.
Eventually, Washington was able to take the 37-34 lead, and the score would hold after a late Oregon comeback attempt fell short on a throw by Bo Nix.
Penix threw 26 completions for 408 yards and two touchdowns on 35 targets while throwing one completion.
It’s time to keep Michael Penix Jr. in mind for the Heisman, and even in the 2023 NFL Draft process.
