Projected college basketball rankings after Gonzaga gets blown out by Texas
Texas completely worked No. 2 Gonzaga in Austin on Wednesday night and the college basketball rankings are now getting a massive shake-up.
It was a huge Wednesday night matchup the day after a wild Champions Classic with the No. 2 team in the college basketball rankings, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, going on the road to Austin to face the Texas Longhorns. Fans were expecting a toe-to-toe clash between two heavyweights of this season.
One team looked like a heavyweight, but the other looked completely lost. And it might come as a shock to some that the latter was Mark Few’s Zags.
Led by a huge performance from sophomore Tyrese Hunter and veteran guard Marcus Carr, the Longhorns took the lead midway through the first half and then just blitzed the Bulldogs throughout the night. They pressured and frustrated Drew Timme and the rest of the Zags into a turnover-filled performance. The end result wasn’t just a Texas win, but an absolute blowout in Austin as Chris Beard’s team earned a 93-74 win.
Now, after two Top 10 teams lost on Tuesday, another has gone down. So we need to check in on what the projected college basketball rankings for next week could look like after Wednesday night’s action.
Projected college basketball rankings after Gonzaga gets blown out by Texas
- Houston Cougars
- North Carolina Tar Heels
- Kansas Jayhawks
- Baylor Bears
- UCLA Bruins
- Texas Longhorns
- Arkansas Razorbacks
- Duke Blue Devils
- Kentucky Wildcats
- Gonzaga Bulldogs
Things are going to change pretty drastically in the college basketball rankings after a 19-point loss for the Zags, even on the road.
First and foremost, Texas is going to get their respect by jumping from No. 11 to No. 6, and you could even make the case for the Longhorns being in the Top 5. Gonzaga won’t drop all the way out of the Top 10, but they’ll be right on the edge after this loss. Of course, their matchup on Sunday against Kentucky will have a lot of implications for the college basketball rankings after the Wildcats lost on Tuesday night.
And while it’s not from Wednesday’s game, UNC is going to drop from the top spot after playing lower-level competition closely while Houston has just run everyone they’ve played off the court. The Cougars have undoubtedly earned that spot thus far, even if the level of competition is subpar.
