Travis Kelce on Giants letting go Kadarius Toney: ‘I don’t get it one bit’
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce still doesn’t understand why the Giants let go of Kadarius Toney — and he doesn’t want to.
After Tyreek Hill opted to leave for greener Miami pastures, the Chiefs responded by making savvy wide receiver acquisitions here and there. Kansas City stole away Marquez Valdes-Scantling, then JuJu Smith-Schuster, and with that, the Chiefs paved the way through another high-flying, conference-dominant season.
While it’s understandable how KC was able to entice MVS and JuJu, how the team landed their latest wide receiver weapon remains an enigma. Somehow, the New York Giants let former first-round pick Kadarius Toney walk out of their building for virtually nothing, and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce still can’t wrap his mind around it.
Then again, he doesn’t really want to understand why the Giants let Toney go — he’s just that overjoyed to play alongside Yung Joka.
When Jason Kelce, the Philadelphia Eagles center and co-host on the Kelce Brothers’ “New Heights” podcast, asked Travis if he can believe that the Giants let Toney go, Travis expressed his continued disbelief as to why they let Toney walk.
"“I don’t know how he got out of that building. I just don’t get it. I don’t get it one bit. I don’t understand, and I don’t even wanna understand. I don’t even wanna know what happened over there. I am just extremely happy that Brett Veach found a way yet again to get an unbelievably talented player in this building.”"
Travis Kelce shocked that the Giants let Kadarius Toney walk out of the building
Travis candidly opens up about the fact that when a young, talented player leaves an organization so abruptly, it’s usually due to an unworkable issue, such as the player’s health or relationship with the organization. However, Kadarius Toney has been the perfect teammate thus far, demonstrating all the qualities Chiefs fans would dream of in a receiver.
"“He’s a great dude. Honestly, I was blown away with how professional he was. I mean, when you get a trade like that, you think there’s something that you have to weigh out. Ever since he’s been in the building, it has been, ‘Man, this dude’s smart. Man, this dude’s crazy athletic. Man, this guy has a lot of confidence.’ And when you have a lot of confidence, it means you understand what’s going on out there. You’re seeing things, you know how to attack it, and that goes back to being a smart player, a smart person, and he’s just been a great teammate.”"
Kelce described Toney’s impeccable ability to catch punts at practice in “the most casual” manner.
"“I’ve never seen anyone catch punts like this. I would assume all the great ones do it like this… It’s one of the coolest things.”"
For anyone wondering about how or why the Giants parted ways with Kadarius Toney, Chiefs fans now know two things: Travis Kelce doesn’t get it either, but this trade already gets an A+ grade from the league’s best tight end.
