2. Red Sox fans won’t feel too good seeing Phillies sign Xander Bogaerts

The defending National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies are also a team expected to pursue the free agent shortstop market. Unlike the Orioles, there is already speculation about them targeting Bogaerts. There’s a clear connection between him and Dave Dombrowski who is now a member of the Phillies organization.

Dombrowski knows Bogaerts well for the time he spent in Boston. It’s not unusual for front office executives to chase after players they know from other teams. In fact, if someone was to ever have the time to look into it, the numbers might surprise us all.

This might not hurt quite as badly as the Orioles. It won’t affect the Red Sox nearly as much. The two teams don’t really matter much to each other until the World Series.

Nonetheless, there is no comfort in seeing Bogaerts land with a team a few hours away down I-95. Dombrowski poaching their players away during a troubling period of Red Sox baseball isn’t what people in Boston signed up for.

Some may think Bogaerts signing with a National League team is the best fans can hope for if he does leave Boston. That’s not necessarily the case. One other destination, which happens to be in the National League, will cause a lot of headaches in New England.
