St. Louis Cardinals: 3 free agents to sign and 1 to avoid this offseason
The Cardinals should sign Noah Syndergaard
The Cardinals can use all the pitching they can get, including a starter who could be utilized situationally as a long reliever.
Syndergaard was signed by the Los Angeles Angels to one year deal last off-season, only to be traded at the deadline to the Philadelphia Phillies. Syndergaard had a lot to prove in his first season away from the New York Mets, and while it’s not a certainty he did all he needed to do, Syndergaard is still an intimidating arm to have in the fold. Putting him with the already formidable Cardinals fold would provide the strike-throwing, innings-eating consistency they need.
In 15 games, Syndergaard was 5-8 with a 3.83 ERA with 64 strikes outs in 80 innings. The slider and sinker are his most used pitches. Syndergaard has a 43.2-percent ground ball out rate. Syndergaard could find real success in front of the Cardinals’ Gold Glove infield with Goldschmidt, Arenado, and Edman.
A two-to-three-year deal could be just the deal to entice Syndergaard into building something with the Cardinals.
