The Kansas City Chiefs are signing former Broncos running back Melvin Gordon and can now use Denver’s own weapon against them in Week 14.

Running back Melvin Gordon has already played for half of the AFC West in his career, beginning his career with the Los Angeles Chargers before more recently suiting up for the Denver Broncos. But following his release, the veteran has been looking for a new home.

Now he’s found one. And he’s joining the Kansas City Chiefs to help move one step closer to completing the Tour de AFC West.

The Chiefs are signing the running back who Denver released last week amid ongoing and troublesome fumbling issues, despite the veteran’s opportunity to take over the backfield of the Broncos after the Javonte Williams injury. The news was first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Chiefs sign Melvin Gordon, setting up revenge game vs Broncos

With Pelissero reporting that Gordon could be active soon, the stage is now set for the running back to exact revenge on his former team as the newest weapon in the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs offense. The two rivals will square off on Sunday Night Football in Week 14.

Gordon remains the Broncos’ leading rusher on the season as he ran for 318 yards and two touchdowns on 90 carries in the 10 games he played this season. However, with four fumbles (two lost) on the season, the coaching staff elected to move on, especially after another veteran, Latavius Murray, entered the fray.

As for Gordon’s fit with the Chiefs, he makes a lot of sense. Kansas City has been looking for a more reliable rusher in the traditional run game, most recently turning to seventh-round rookie Isiah Pacheco to handle the load after Clyde Edwards-Helaire disappointed. Gordon may not be a superstar, but he could be a stabilizing presence in the crowded backfield.

If nothing else, though, he’s another weapon now at Andy Reid’s disposal as the team eyes another Super Bowl. And if they have to use Gordon to bury the Broncos in Week 14 to get to that goal, so be it.
