Jaguars player drags Urban Meyer while praising Trevor Lawrence
By Rylie Smith
Jacksonville Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard has a clear soft spot for teammate Trevor Lawrence, but not so much for former coach Urban Meyer.
Andrew Wingard is a familiar face on the Jaguars as he’s in the final stretch of his fourth season, and he’s clearly a friendly guy with his teammates as he praised quarterback Trevor Lawrence in a post-game interview. He simultaneously dragged former coach Urban Meyer.
He shared, “I’m just so happy for Trevor because he had to deal with Urban Meyer last year as a rookie, and I don’t even know if he had a rookie year. And to see the growth he’s made, not just on the field, but just like his preparation, his demeanor, all that.”
Meyer was a complete wreck in Jacksonville as he was constantly involved in scandals that ultimately led to him getting fired in December.
Lawrence, on the other hand, has indeed only gotten better from his lackluster performance last season.
Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence has improved significantly
In his rookie season, Lawrence didn’t produce the best results with 359 completions for a completion percentage of 59.6. He had 3,641 passing yards, an average of six yards per pass and 12 touchdowns.
This season, he’s yet to pass some of his numbers, but he’s on track to as there are six games left of the season. So far, he’s had 256 completions for a completion percentage of 66.5, 2,655 passing yards, an average of 6.9 yards per pass and 16 touchdowns. He seems to be getting much more comfortable in his role as starter.
He had the best game of his career on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, producing 29 completions for a completion percentage of 78.4, 321 passing yards, an average of 8.7 yards per pass and three touchdowns.
He’s come a long way from his rookie season, and as Wingard suggested, if he can get through having Meyer as a coach, he can get through anything.
