Justin Verlander’s new profile pic will make Astros fans squirm

Justin Verlander revealed his new Twitter profile picture after his deal with the New York Mets became official.

The Houston Astros won their second World Series title in franchise history this past season, and had to brace for an important offseason. They did manage to bring in a big name first baseman in Jose Abreu, but they were in serious danger of losing ace and reigning AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander. Sure enough, the New York Mets and Verlander agreed to a two-year, $86.6 million contract at the Winter Meetings on Monday.

On Wednesday night, the deal became official. That was evident after the Mets announced the signing on their Twitter account. Then, Verlander sent out a tweet showing off his new profile picture, which features a Mets hat and a pinstriped jersey drawn on him.

Given that the Astros faithful have seen him wear the navy and orange uniforms since 2017, it will take some getting used to seeing him wear blue and orange.

Verlander is coming off of an incredible season after missing the prior year due to Tommy John surgery. He led the entire American League with a 1.75 ERA, a 0.829 WHIP, 18 wins, and a 6.0 hits-per-nine innings ratio at the age of 39. He won the AL Cy Young award unanimously.

The Mets jumped at the opportunity to sign Verlander after they saw the Texas Rangers offer ace Jacob deGrom a five-year, $185 million contract. In Verlander’s deal, the Mets also included a vesting option for a third season worth $35 million.

Joining the Mets also presents itself as a reunion of sorts, as he will be at the top of their starting rotation alongside former Detroit Tigers teammate Max Scherzer.

After a six year tenure that saw two World Series titles won, Astros prepare for life after Verlander at the top of their rotation.
