MLB insider: Everything to know about Aaron Judge free-agent decision
The New York Yankees signed Aaron Judge on Wednesday morning. What happens next?
With Aaron Judge agreeing to a nine-year, $360 million contract with the New York Yankees, the dominoes at the Winter Meetings are starting to fall.
But the market is starting to gain clarity, especially for the teams involved for Judge.
Now that the Yankees have signed Judge, they are eyeing the pitching market, according to sources, and have shown interest in Carlos Rodon, the top pitcher on the market. Rodon has sought a six-year contract in free agency and would give New York a second elite starting pitcher to pair with Gerrit Cole, something the organization has sought in recent seasons.
Aaron Judge signing: Where do the Yankees and Giants go from here?
The Giants, meanwhile, have turned their attention toward the shortstop market and are expected to pursue at least one of the top options available — Carlos Correa, Dansby Swanson or Xander Bogaerts. Their preference was to add two big name outfielders — they signed Mitch Haniger to a three-year contract on Tuesday — but signing any of the shortstops would quench their thirst for a big name slugger.
The third and final team on Judge was surprisingly the San Diego Padres. They offered Trea Turner a $342 million contract, sources say, and were very interested in Judge. But with both players off the board, they are also looking at the shortstop market and have expressed interest in free-agent shortstop Xander Bogaerts, according to sources, as he continues to negotiate with the Red Sox and others.
