Ranking the 10 worst contracts in NBA history
5. Gilbert Arenas (6 years, $111 million)
Unlike many of the other names on this list whose contracts were disappointing because of unexpected injuries or playing past their prime, Gilbert Arenas’s contract was a mess for a variety of other reasons.
Arenas have been the face of the Washington Wizards organization for several years, so the franchise was determined to keep the aging star – -despite his declining stats. They signed him to a six-year, $111 million dollar deal in 2007. The following season, however, he started just eight games and saw his points per game decline from 28.4 to 19.4.
This contract, took a bizarre turn in 2009 when Arenas (who had an unlicensed gun in his locker) and teammate Javaris Crittenton got into an argument at Capital One Arena, over gambling. The argument ultimately involved the DC police and Arenas pleaded guilty to a felony weapons possession charge.
The league ultimately got involved, and by the 2010 season, Gilbert Arenas had been traded to the Orlando Magic. Arenas’ stats never recovered to their highs prior to signing this contract. He bounced around the league for a couple more seasons before heading to China to play.
