Argentina is a two-time world champion, capturing the title in 1978 and 1986. The Netherlands, meanwhile, reached the final three times, in 1974, 1978 and 2010, but has never lifted the trophy.
The Albiceleste and Oranje have done battle before at the World Cup. They have played each other at five previous World Cups: 1974, 1978, 1998, 2006 and 2014.
The Netherlands defeated Argentina 4-0 in the second group phase of the 1974 World Cup, with Johan Cruyff scoring twice in a 4-0 victory. Four years later, the Oranje made the final, but were defeated by hosts Argentina 3-1 in the title match following extra time.
In 1998, Netherlands striker Dennis Bergkamp scored in the 90th minute in a 2-1 quarterfinal win. In 2006, the sides met during the group stage, playing to a scoreless draw. In 2014, Argentina outlasted the Netherlands on penalties in the semifinals following another 0-0 draw.
