Ranking every possible 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship Game matchup
The College Football Playoff has Georgia vs Ohio State and Michigan vs TCU in the semifinals. What are the best National Championship Game matchups though?
Welcome to the college football postseason. The Army-Navy Game and the Heisman Trophy ceremony are now in the books, so it’s time to get ready for the bowl games. But let’s be real, given the current structure of things and the many decisions to opt out that have come and will continue to come, many fans are simply looking to the College Football Playoff.
The two semifinal matchups are set for Dec. 31 as the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs will take on the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes in the Peach Bowl while the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines face the No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs in the Fiesta Bowl. These are the deserving four teams to play for the chance to be in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Jan. 9.
While we know the four teams that have a chance, though, we have to also look at the potential matchups. And it only makes sense to rank them — admittedly pretty subjectively — over which National Championship Game matchups would be the best to see and which would be the least desirable. There aren’t any bad games, to be sure. But from worst to best, these are how all the possible natty matchups stack up against one another.
College Football Playoff National Championship Game Matchup No. 4: TCU vs Georgia
It’s been a remarkable season for the Horned Frogs, whether it’s coming out of nowhere to have an undefeated regular season in Sonny Dykes’ first year as the head coach, Max Duggan making a Heisman run or all of the wild and thrilling comebacks TCU has come out on top in games because of throughout the year.
But when I look at the idea of TCU and Georgia playing for a national championship, the needle just isn’t moving for me. Yes, it would be a fantastic narrative game with the proverbial David vs Goliath imagery being painted to hype up the contest, but the way that plays out on the college football 99 times out of 100 is with Goliath beating David into unabashed submission.
The Horned Frogs talent disparity in this matchup would be just too hard for them to overcome. We saw this offensive line struggle the most against Texas and Kansas State this season, the two best defensive fronts they faced. But neither of those units are on the level of Georgia’s. The same is true in the trenches on the opposite side of the ball as the Dawgs have arguably the best offensive line in the country.
Georgia vs TCU might not be an unmitigated disaster or a blowout, but the matchups and the talent on the field would lead me to believe that the Bulldogs would never feel in danger of losing, which isn’t the National Championship Game that I want to see.
