Fans are disrespecting Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce in Pro Bowl voting
By Scott Rogust
With just one day remaining to vote in the NFL Pro Bowl, there hasn’t been much love given to Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
The NFL Pro Bowl has been overhauled. No longer is the tackle game that had been criticized by fans and media for the lack of effort. Instead, the focus will be placed on skills competitions and seven-on-seven flag football games. The voting has been open for quite some time, but it officially ends on Thursday, Dec. 15.
For Kansas City Chiefs fans, you won’t like the vote count one day prior to the deadline.
On Wednesday, Mahomes and Kelce rank third and fourth in vote-getting respectively. Holding the No. 1 spot is none other than Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce make top five of Pro Bowl voting, but trail Tua Tagovailoa
The last time that the NFL released an update on the Pro Bowl voting was on Nov. 28, and Mahomes received the most votes among quarterbacks. Tagovailoa wasn’t even among the top five vote-getters. Since then, Tagovailoa made a jump all the way to the No. 1 spot.
Tagovailoa had been on a roll in his third season, helping lead the Dolphins into playoff contention, But in recent weeks, he has had some less-than-ideal performances. In Week 12, Tagovailoa threw two interceptions in the teams’ 33-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Then, this past weekend, Tagovailoa completed just 10-of-28 pass attempts for 145 yards in the team’s 23-17 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
This season, Tagovailoa completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 3,004 yards and 22 touchdowns, while throwing five interceptions in 11 games. Tagovailoa leads the NFL in yards gained per pass attempt (8.7), yards gained per completion (13.3), and net yards gained per pass attempt (7.94).
Mahomes did have a rough game this past Sunday against the Denver Broncos, where he threw three interceptions. However, the team was able to hang on for a 34-28 win.
In 13 games, Mahomes leads the league with 4,160 passing yards, 33 passing touchdowns, and 320.0 yards gained per game played.
Kelce, meanwhile, is fifth in receiving yards this season with 1,039 and tied for first in touchdown receptions with 12.
According to the NFL, roster selections will be made by votes from fans, players, and coaches. Players and coaches will cast their votes on Friday, Dec. 16.
NFL Pro Bowl rosters will be revealed on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 8:00 p.m. ET on NFL Network.
