Every professional basketball league has its own rules, structures and court dimensions. How many fouls does it take to foul out in a WNBA game?

The brand of the WNBA continues to expand and the level of competition continues to rise. Coming off their biggest season in league history more fans are tuning in than ever, especially new fans still learning about the women’s game.

There are subtle rule differences between the WNBA and other professional leagues, including the number of fouls it takes to foul out of a game. Currently, the WNBA’s foul limit is six per game.

Will the WNBA ever chance its foul limit?

The WNBA was born on April 24, 1996, and the inaugural season was played in June of 1997. Former NBA Commissioner David Stern believed in the concept of a women’s counterpart to the NBA.

Players can commit six fouls per game in the WNBA before fouling out, despite shorter games — an NBA game lasts 48 minutes, a WNBA game is 40 minutes But even with a shorter game, the six-foul limit is needed.

As the game continues to evolve and the next wave of talent transcends the past, it’s important to allow players to have some leeway and help teams keep their best players on the court.

The 2023 WNBA season is set to start May 19. This season is going to set records for the league and is a must-watch for all basketball fans.
