Coaches who need to updated their resume after Week 15: Lovie Smith, Houston Texans

The Houston Texans are in the driver’s seat for the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Their roster was among the worst in the league on paper, but there was always the chance that they could surprise. That has not happened for the majority of the season, but they nearly pulled off an upset win over the Dallas Cowboys back in Week 14. This team is playing hard for head coach Lovie Smith.

Houston had another tough game on paper, facing off against the Kansas City Chiefs. Once again gave another playoff contender fits, as they actually forced overtime against the AFC powerhouses. Ultimately, however, the Texans lost after quarterback Davis Mills fumbled on their first offensive play in overtime. Then, the Chiefs won on a 26-play touchdown run on the very next play.

Once again, the Texans are playing hard for Smith. But, the wins aren’t coming. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noted in a recent column with Dan Graziano (subscription required) that some in the league believe that Smith “could be on shaky ground after this year’s one-win performance.”

It certainly wouldn’t be ideal that they fire their head coach in consecutive years, but they have an important decision to make. They are very likely to select their franchise quarterback with the first pick in April’s NFL Draft, and they will need to figure out if Smith can be the coach to get the most out of the player and team as a whole, or if that coach is elsewhere.
