The Kansas City Chiefs clinched their seventh straight AFC West crown on Sunday, thanks to a game-winning touchdown run by Jerick McKinnon in overtime.

Jerick McKinnon has emerged as a valuable member of the Kansas City backfield in recent weeks, and despite a questionable effort at best by the teams as a whole against the lowly Houston Texans, he was able to give Chiefs fans an early holiday gift.

KC has won their seventh straight AFC West crown — the majority of which came with Patrick Mahomes at the helm. McKinnon’s run came just after a Frank Clark fumble recovery. Mitch Holthus had the call.

Kansas City is likely to slot in as the No. 2 seed in the AFC behind the Buffalo Bills, assuming Josh Allen’s team doesn’t lose down the stretch. Buffalo has won five games in a row.

The difference between clinching the conference and slotting into that No. 2 seed looms quite large, as only the top seed receives a first-round bye. Kansas City, as things stand, would have to play on Wild Card weekend against whichever team slides into the final playoff spot.

As of now, that mystery opponent is unknown. The Patriots, Jets, and a litany of 6-8 teams are fighting for that spot.

Despite the win, the Chiefs left much to be desired on the field. KC allowed Houston to move the football in critical moments, and turned the ball over far too often. On the season, the Chiefs are -6 in turnover ratio, something that could be their undoing come the postseason.

The team’s X-factor, as always, is Mahomes. The MVP candidate is arguably the best quarterback in football when he plays to the best of his ability. When the moment calls for it, he’ll be ready.
