Matty Iced Out: NFL fans pitch nicknames for historic Minnesota miracle
It’s time for Minnesota Vikings fans to band together and name “another Minneapolis Miracle” — and the second-worst Matt Ryan meltdown of all time.
On Saturday, the Minnesota Vikings made NFL history with the biggest comeback in the league’s history: a roaring 33-point return to glory that allowed the Vikings to take it to overtime and win it 39-36.
After falling to 33-0 by halftime, all head coach Kevin O’Connell had to do to rally the troops was remind them they needed five touchdowns. To their credit, the Vikings wielded some prime Julian Edelman “you gotta believe” Super Bowl energy, and it worked. The Vikings rallied to score 36 points in regulation while holding the Indianapolis Colts to a measly field goal in the second half.
It was, at some put it, another Minneapolis Miracle, although this one was more miraculous in scope. Aside from the two glorious games taking place in Minneapolis, the Vikings-Colts game repeated another historic moment: Matt Ryan blowing the lead like no one else in sports history.
Sadly for Ryan, he will forever be known as the quarterback who allowed a 28-3 lead and a 33-0 lead to result in losses for his team.
In the aftermath, the “Games With Names” podcast — co-hosted by none other than Julian Edelman himself — asked fans to name this iconic NFL moment, and so the naming of this game began.
Vikings fans cast votes in naming a Minneapolis Snowdown featuring Matty Iced Out
An easy winner would be “Matty Iced Out in Minneapolis”, a play on Ryan’s nickname and the sacred ground where Minneapolis miracles take place.
Matty was iced out in an entirely different way than Kirk Cousins has been this year, and Cousins’ pre-planned post-game fit couldn’t have been more clutch after the win.
For a sponsored twist, there’s “Colts Crumbl brought to you by Crumbl Cookies.” If game attendees each got a box of Crumbl Cookies, it could convince fans to cave for this moniker.
But “Matt Ryan’s Nightmare Before Christmas?” There are truly no wrong answers among these nominations.
Some fans pitched several names, such as “Captain Cousins’ Comeback” and “Saturday’s Sadurday.” Puns are welcome in this unofficial competition, and since it likely cost Saturday his interim coaching job, it was definitely a Sadurday for everyone in Indianapolis.
But there’s something charming about the simplest names, like “the Minnesota Mishap.” Blowing a 33-point lead is a little more than a mere mishap, but that’s the fun of this cavalier name.
Whatever fans decide to call this name, what’s clear is that everyone will laugh — or cry — as they remember this moment in sports history. Who knows, maybe fans will even get to hear both sides of the story from a future “Games With Names” episode where Edelman interviews Ryan about the Second Comeback he’s endured.
