The Cowboys are having an open competition at the cornerback spot opposite Trevon Diggs after the second game without CB2 Anthony Brown was a disaster.

Dallas is set at one cornerback spot with Trevon Diggs keeping opposing wide receivers in check. On the other side, things are far less comfortable.

The Cowboys had relied on Anthony Brown as their No. 2 cornerback this year but the seventh-year pro went down with an Achilles injury against the Colts.

With Brown’s season over, DC Dan Quinn shifted DaRon Bland over to fill his starting place against Houston. Against Jacksonville, it was Kelvin Joseph who started with Bland back at the nickel spot.

The solutions so far haven’t been up to par. So Quinn is looking for new ones.

Cowboys opening up competition for CB opposite Trevon Diggs

Quinn told reporters on Monday that Kelvin Joseph, Nahshon Wright, Mackenzie Alexander, Kendall Sheffield and Trayvon Mullen will battle it out this week for the right to start opposite Diggs.

Joseph had to be benched after giving up two touchdowns against the Jaguars, so he needs to prove Quinn can still count on him. Wright was the one who replaced Joseph but he’s only played in four games so far this season.

The Cowboys lost that game to Jacksonville while giving up four touchdowns to Trevor Lawrence. They led by 17 points in the third quarter before letting the Jags QB go off.

Injuries have taken their toll on the Cowboys DB group. Bland has been a bright spot since coming through to replace Jourdan Lewis because of injury. However, the rookie has almost made himself too valuable at nickel with four interceptions this year to move outside without a clear replacement behind him.

Instead, Quinn is hoping someone will step up to fill Brown’s absence in a way they haven’t so far.
