Zach Edey was an emerging threat for Purdue last season as the team made a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament, but he wasn’t trusted enough to lead the team past St. Peter’s as the Peacocks continued their Cinderella run.

This season, Edey looks like the clear best player in the country, and oddsmakers have moved Edey to the favorite to win the Wooden Award. The Boilermakers big man is fifth in the country in scoring, averaging over 22 points per game, and leading the nation in rebounding with almost 14 boards per game.

Here is the updated betting market for the Wooden Award, with the 7’4″ Boilermakers big well ahead of the pack.

Helping Edey’s case is that Purdue is one of the lone unbeaten teams left in the country, 11-0, and tops in the AP Poll for the second straight week. Edey’s dominance is not only padding his stats, but is padding his team’s ability to take home a top seed in the NCAA Tournament.

It’s going to be tough to top Edey if he keeps up not only his fine play but Purdue stays at the top of the poll’s week to week.

Reigning National Player of the Year Oscar Tshiebwe lurks as the second choice, but Kentucky is lacking many signature victories and his numbers are down from last season. Other contenders like Jalen Wilson and Drew Timme are on solid rosters, but they simply don’t have the numbers to match Edey at this point.
