Cowboys fatal flaws going into NFL Playoffs: Secondary
Anthony Brown is down for the season, and that’s a huge loss for the Cowboys’ secondary. Remember, earlier we talked about the potent combination of the Cowboys’ pass rush and secondary. The former is to be counted on, but the latter is now an area of deep concern.
Trevon Diggs is known for grabbing tons of interceptions, but his whole shtick is to gamble heavily for those INTs. That means that if his man is able to make a play on the ball, it could be open season for him to take it to the house. That’s why Diggs has given up the 13th most yards in the NFL and is 17th-worst in the league for yards given up after catch, despite his three interceptions.
But that’s not the problem, really, as Diggs has been decent.
Here’s how the current starting secondary has graded out per Pro Football Focus this season:
- LCB: DaRon Bland: 72.8
- SS: Jayron Kearse: 70.9
- FS: Donovan Wilson: 71.0
- RCB: Trevon Diggs: 69.0
But look at how the second-string corners have graded:
- Kelvin Joseph: 48.9
- Nahshon Wright: 40.7
So… yeah. Starters look workable, but if and when the Cowboys need to rotate second strings in, look out, it could be turnstile city and any opportunistic offense will look to run up the score in those situations.
That could be the reason the Cowboys lose close games in the postseason.
